Kevin Conroy, BATMAN
KEVIN CONROY (VOICED OF BATSMAN)
Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman in the popular 1990s cartoon series,
has died
at age 66. A cause of death wasn't given. "We're deeply saddened by
the loss of our dear friend Kevin," Warner Bros., which produced the
series, said in a statement. "His portrayal of the Caped Crusader will forever stand among the
greatest performances of the Dark Knight in animation."
Conroy also provided the voice of Batman
in video games such as "Batman: Arkham" and "Batman: Arkham Origins."
He appeared in multiple movies including "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Justice League."
Conroy
was born in Westbury, N.Y., and grew up in Westport, Conn. He
studied drama at the Juilliard School in New York City and roomed with Robin William's son
Zachary.
Conroy performed in "A Midsummer Night's Dream"
at the
Public Theater in New York and in "Eastern Standard" on Broadway.
He performed at the Old Globe Theatre in California in "Hamlet."
Conroy moved to Los Angles in 1980 and began acting in soap
operias and booking appearances on TV shows
including "Cheers," "Tour of Duty" and "Murphy Brown."
Conroy auditioned for "Batman: The Animated Series" in 1991 and landed the role. He portrayed the Caped Crusader without any background in comics. His Batman was husky and brooding and his Bruce Wayne was light and charming.
Conroy's inspiration for
the contrasting voices came from the 1930s movie "The Scarlet
Pimpernell," about an English aristocrat leading a double life. "It's so
much fun as an acter to sink your teeth into," Conroy told The New Yorks
Times in 2016. "Calling it animation doesn't do it justice. It's more
like mythology." Conroy is survived
